Last day in the Orient – Day 7

Talks at the conference started earlier today, which meant an earlier start for me. Thankfully, my internal clock had become more skewed towards morning since I’d been in Hong Kong. I seemed to be waking up at 7 am like clockwork, and today was no different. I was out the door before 8 am, stopping in at McDonald’s for a quick bite of breakfast before heading off. It wasn’t long before I was trundling up the mountain in the shuttle…

Tone tone tone – Day 6

Photos The second conference of the trip, the Psycholinguistic Representation of Tone, was not, unfortunately, nearby our hotel. It was being held at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in the New Territories, about 50 minutes away by train. We had thought to perhaps take the taxi through the tunnel from Hong Kong island to the Kowloon side to minimize the number of transfers. However, we couldn’t seem to find a cab that would take us over.

    A smorgasbord of success – Day 5

Photos After awaking to find I had fallen asleep with my laptop and camera on my lap, I went about my morning rituals a bit slower than usual. I had first thought that I might try to visit the Hong Kong Botanical and Zoological Garden, but the idea of trudging about in the heat was a fatiguing thought. I settled for a happy, air-conditioned standby: shopping. Causeway Bay is reputed to be one of Hong Kong’s major shopping areas, and…

The top of the world – Day 4

Photos I awoke and primped in time for the morning talks at the conference. I stayed for the first session on second language perception/production, before ducking out to get a little sightseeing in. I figured since I will be heading out a fair distance to attend to the tone conference Monday and Tuesday, I’ll be at that conference for full days. Given that, I thought I’d better do any remaining sightseeing I’d like to do in the next couple days.…

Melting away in “Chinagal” (a.k.a. Macau) – Day 3

Photos My morning began with a quick pit-stop at the Congress to support a fellow SFUer’s talk before heading out for a day of sightseeing. The conference organizers were kind enough to give us the afternoon off for such an occasion. Jen and I headed back to the hotel to pick up an umbrella, as the clouds overhead were looking a little unpredictable. The plan for the afternoon was to head over to Macau, an island formerly belonging to Portugal…

    Game day – Day 2

I awoke after a decent night’s sleep and worked on my presentation notes/speech for a couple hours in the morning, making a brief breakfast run to the convenience store downstairs. I headed over to the Congress for the morning sessions, sitting in on a few second language talks and a tone perception talk. A slight touch of nerves for my impending presentation led me to have a rather abbreviated lunch break–a quick egg salad/avocado sandwich at Deli France near the…

A taste of the Congress – Day 1

Photos Sleep was fitful, perhaps in part due to how much I slept on my flights. I did manage to chat with David at around 3:30 am before catching a bit more sleep. I left fairly early in search of food in the general direction of the Hong Kong Convention Centre. The wave of humidity that hit me as I exited the hotel instantly brought me back to my time in Thailand. The heat was definitely present, though not unbearable,…

transiting to Hong Kong – Day 0

It’s been a whirlwind of a week, heading down to Portland for several days before coming back up to Vancouver for 18 hours or so and then flying out to Hong Kong. Mercifully, my fight was at a reasonable hour, so I was able to get myself together in the morning. I was reminded of how much I like Vancouver Airport–clean, comfortable and free wifi. After going through enough airports, YVR has its own particular charm.
